last night i was heading to bed quite early when i checked twitter and saw a RIP steve jobs tweet. no! i was in shock and quickly went to CNN.com where nothing was up yet. next, a google search and found that yes, indeed, it was true – had been announced three minutes ago. then came the feature on apple.com, all the news sites, all over twitter and facebook. the irony is that most of us found out about his death through items he created – i was on my iPhone and then pulled out my macbook air to dig deeper. le sigh.

it’s amazing how so many people who never even met steve jobs are so moved by the announcement of his death. can you imagine being compared to such great minds as leonardo di vinci, henry ford, or thomas edison? i mean, wow! this moment reminds me of the value in creating something that makes a difference. truly leaving a legacy. following your passion with all you’ve got. it doesn’t have to be done by developing techy products, it can be a service, non-profit, dress, family, poem, animal sanctuary – you name it!

i love this piece from the CNN article linked to above: “he did what a CEO should: hired and inspired great people; managed for the long term, not the quarter of the short-term stock price; made big bets and took big risks.” wow, truly a leader to emulate!

if you haven’t seen pirates of silicon valley, i encourage you to carve out 2 hours to watch it. i saw it in august when he stepped down as CEO and it’s been in the back of my mind ever since. if you haven’t read his 2005 stanford commencement address, i encourage you to read the transcript or watch the video for a dose of inspiration. i love this piece on the spiritual side of steve. ommmm.

finally, i leave you with a thought to ponder. how are you leaving a legacy? i truly believe this will be heavy on the hearts of many (definitely mine!) over the next few days as we mourn the loss of a creative genius, innovator extraordinaire, and entrepreneurial inspiration.
